DYCP - making a film part 1

Process

Recording different parts of the process through photography and film. Two vessels in progress, one copper and one silver.

Why make a film?

A really important part of my practice is documenting and reflecting on the processes I use and the pieces I make. For this project I wanted to give context to my practice and learn from my own process, which I have chosen to do with the help of film maker Fern Scott. The idea is to have a professional film interspersed with footage captured by me using a helmet camera.

I explored filming my own making process several years ago when I was studying, inspired by my interest in other peoples making process and wanting to capture the perspective of the maker. I have always known I would come back to explore this further and having worked with Fern about 5 years ago (see film below) I thought a collaborative film would be perfect, after all, I know my own limits.

The filming

Fern travelled up from Bristol to Sheffield on Wednesday 18th May and we spent all day Thursday and Friday capturing footage and shots in various locations around Lincolnshire and Sheffield. I grew up in Lincoln and spent every weekend at my grandma and grandads farm near Glentham. I have lived in Sheffield for the last 10 years and both places are huge influences in my practice. It’s safe to say Fern worked really hard to get everything I wanted her to and we were both well and truly due a day off afterwords.

Now comes the tricky part where I have get some decent amateur footage for Fern to weave into her beautiful shots! Not too much pressure. So far I haven’t managed to get much, however I have learnt so much about how to use the Go pro and what doesn’t work so I am hopeful this will happen soon. In the meantime I have an amazing collection of samples now to play with and some really exciting ideas for experiments using what I have learned so far.

Recording everything!

The film will become a beautifully crafted finished piece within my project, but I am also recording all of my research and patination experiments through photography and notes. The note taking is a very different way for me to work but I am really enjoying organising all of my samples and noting down where things go wrong or right for that matter. I want to be able to replicate the results for myself with intention but also really want to share with others, there has been mention of a book…so watch this space!
